Gas is the body’s natural way of releasing waste, but when it gets trapped in the body, it can cause pain and swelling of the belly. This can be both embarrassing and uncomfortable.

However, when you can no longer release gas naturally and it feels trapped and causes you discomfort, it is an indication of an underlying problem that needs immediate medical attention.

Although trapped gas is not a serious problem, and will often go away by itself,  knowing how to get rid of it is important.

What is Trapped Gas?

Trapped gas is gas stuck or blocked in the digestive system including the intestine, abdomen, or stomach. This causes discomfort, bloating, and pain. This trapped gas includes belching, passing gas (flatulence), and breathing sometimes.

It happens as a result of food sensitivity, poor snacking habits, swallowing too much air while chewing gum, slow digestion, and sometimes even aging. This is a minor issue and can be resolved with the right remedies.

Signs and Symptoms of Trapped Gas

Here are some signs and symptoms of trapped gas:

Bloating

Bloating is the feeling of having a full stomach. In this case, the belly increases in size and doesn't seem to be relieved by belching, passing gas, or having a bowel movement.

Belching

Belching also known as burping occurs when the body pushes out excess air from the upper digestive tract. This is caused by swallowing excess air which most times never reaches the stomach, but builds up in the esophagus.

This excess air can be swallowed when eating or drinking too fast, chewing gum, or talking while eating. Drinking carbonated beverages, or smoking can cause belching.

Flatulence

Trapped in the small intestine or colon is caused by the fermentation of undigested food by bacteria found in the stomach. Flatulence can form when food components are not completely digested. Foods in this category include grains, or dairy products that contain sugar and fruit.

Other signs and symptoms include;

  • Discomfort and unease while trying to pass gas.
  • Releasing foul odor when belching.
  • The feeling of nausea and vomiting.
  • Gallbladder pain.
  • Breathing difficulties.

How To Get Rid of Trapped Gas

Trapped gas is a minor issue and can be resolved with or without consulting a medical practitioner.  Here are simple remedies to get rid of trapped gas:

  • Allow it to pass naturally: It is advisable to let the trapped gas pass out naturally without forcing it. Give it time to pass out naturally.
