Coughing is the body's response to irritation that affects the airways. It helps get rid of irritants from the airways and it is often painful and exhausting. Cough is healthier when it occurs occasionally, and unhealthy when it is persistent. There are different ways to make coughs go away naturally, and in this article, we highlight some of them.

How To Make Cough Go Away Naturally

Natural remedies are great options to soothe a cough, and here are some of them:

1. Honey

Honey is an effective remedy for soothing coughs. By coating the lining of the throat, it reduces the soreness and scratching feeling in it.

A research study has shown that honey is an excellent  option for alleviating symptoms of upper respiratory infections, such as coughing. Honey contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties that may also help fight infections and boost the immune system. For best results, take a spoonful of honey or add it to warm tea.

2. Ginger

Ginger is a well known remedy for various ailments, including coughs. It contains bioactive compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

These bioactive compounds present in ginger can help soothe a sore throat and relieve coughing. Containing a spicy taste that stimulates saliva production, ginger can act as a lubricant to a dry mouth or throat. Fresh or dried ginger root can be eaten or added to tea for additional relief.

3. Steam Inhalation

This sounds easy, but is actually an effective way of relieving coughs, especially those caused by congestion.Mucus in the throat and nasal passages can be more easily cleared by using steam to release it. You can achieve this by wrapping your head in a towel to trap the steam and position your face over a bowl of steaming water.

4. Saltwater Gargle

This is a traditional method of treatment for sore throats and coughs. Saltwater helps in killing bacteria, mucus liquefaction, and throat swelling reduction.

One-fourth or half a teaspoon of salt should be dissolved in an eight-ounce glass of warm water to form a saltwater gargle. Repeat the process of gargling the mixture several times a day may prove beneficial.

5. Sip Warm Liquids

Drinking warm water can give immediate relief for cough by helping to break up the mucus and soothing the throat.

Warm water mixed with honey or peppermint,  chamomile or warm broth are the best choices for this. The warm water helps relax the muscle, and reduces the urge to cough.

6. Drink Water

Constantly sipping water from a glass can help clear irritation from the throat, and provide an instant relief. When the throat stays hydrated, it becomes easier for the mouth to expel the irritant.

7. Ginger or Peppermint

Ginger and peppermint have natural soothing properties that can help reduce coughing. Ginger can be eaten raw or taken in tea, while peppermint tea can help break down mucus and provide relief. The menthol property in peppermint acts as a natural decongestant, which can ease breathing and reduce coughing.

Wrapping Up

While these natural remedies are effective, it is important to seek the attention of a medical provider if symptoms persist. Coughing can be a sign of an underlying health condition, hence early detection of the health condition can prevent complications.
